To the Editor:
I wish to comment on the article "Acquired Cystic Renal Disease in Patients on Long-term Hemodialysis" published in your journal in the issue of 1997, volume 8, no. 1.
- It was Frericks and Piepers who first described acquired cystic renal disease (ACRD) in 1851 and 1894 respectively (1,2) and was latter followed by Dunnil in 1977.
- The article implies that hemodialysis per se is a risk factor for development of ACRD as mentioned in the discussion. I believe that both hemodialysis and CAPD increase the life span of patients with end-stage renal disease thereby increasing, the time period necessary for development of renal cysts [2],[3],[4].
- As the mean age of the patient study group was 50.4 years range (16-85) one cannot exclude simple cysts developing as an aging process.
- I feel that the sample size of 37 patients is not enough to give an exact prevalence of disease and it would have been more informative if an age matched control group not on hemodialysis were included in the study.[4]
